Nyungwe Forest Canopy Walk

Nyungwe Forest Canopy Walk

A suspension above the lush montane rainforest is the Canopy walk of Nyungwe Forest National Park, one that offers a spectacular view of the ancient forest tree tops as well as bird life and other species within. Suspended above a ravine in the lush montane rainforest of Nyungwe National Park, the canopy walkway provides an exhilarating perspective on the ancient treetops and wildlife. The 160m long and 70m high suspension bridge is accessible as part of a guided tour along the Igishigishigi trail, or to those hiking the Imbaraga or Umuyove trails. To have a canopy walk experience, you take either the Igishigishigi, Imbaraga or the Umuyove trails. To reach the park you will be driven on a 4×4 safari vehicle, however, on arrival at the Uwinka visitor centre, you will walk to the canopy walk start point. Walking 60 meters above the forest floor could be anxiety causing for those people with height problems, but it’s worth undertaking and a remarkable experience.

Nyungwe Forest Canopy Walk
Having escaped the last ice age, the Nyungwe forest is a hotbed of biodiversity. Along the hour’s walk to the canopy walkway from the Uwinka Reception Centre, visitors will see countless butterflies, orchids and colourful birds, including many endemic to the region. Thirteen species of primate live in Nyungwe, so a chance encounter isn’t out of the question, although those wishing to seek them out should opt for a dedicated primate visit.

The canopy walkway gives visitors a unique perspective of the tree canopy of Nyungwe Forest. The view from the suspended bridge also enables visitors to get above the tree canopies in order to get a bird’s eye view of the surrounding forest. The canopy walkway was created in 2010 by the Rwanda Development Board as a of improving access to the unique habitat of Nyungwe forest to a broader audience. The canopy walkway is best enjoyed during an early morning walk when the weather is generally better and risk of rain lower. Many birds and other animals are also active during this time. The trails that lead to the canopy walkway can also be combined with hikes to other interesting places such as Kamiranzovu swamp.
